Titling a new vehicle:

1. Properly signed manufacturer’s statement of origin (MSO) or Title.
2. Acceptable proof of insurance. This includes the following:

  • Insurance card issued by an insurance company (it must show the vehicle identification number and make & year of vehicle, policy number, name of the insured and the effective and expiration date of the policy
  • Certificate of self-insurance issued by the insurance commissioner
  • Binder of insurance
  • Motor carrier ID number issued by the state corporation commission
  • A fleet policy
  • A commercial policy

3. Odometer Disclosure Statement must be completed if MSO is non- conforming. (Vehicles 10 years old or older trucks registered at 20M or higher are exempt. (A mileage reading will still be required).
4. Sales tax receipt if Kansas Dealer. If out of state dealer, County will collect tax, and a bill of sale or invoice is required.
5. Property tax must be paid at time of registration/title application (exceptions Heavy Trucks, Trailers and Motorbikes)
6. A dealer reassignment (Form TR-127) may be attached to an MSO when a franchised dealer reassigns.
7. Title application must be signed by new owner

Titling a used vehicle:

1. Properly signed title.
2. If the title is an out of state title a VIN inspection is required. Inspection may be obtained from an inspection station.
3. Acceptable proof of insurance. This includes the following:

  • Certificate of insurance
  • Insurance card issued by an insurance company (it must show the vehicle identification number, make and year of vehicle, policy number, name of the insured and the effective and expiration date of the policy.
  • Certificate of self-insurance issued by the insurance commissioner
  • Binder of insurance
  • Motor carrier ID number issued by the state corporation commission
  • A fleet policy
  • A commercial policy

4. Sales Tax receipt if Kansas Dealer. If not a Kansas Dealer, a bill of sale is required is amount of sale is not on the back of title. (Bill of Sale is a affidavit which must include vehicle identification number, year, make signature of seller and name and address of the buyer.) The county will collect the sales tax.
5. Complete Odometer Disclosure Statement if title is non-conforming. (Vehicle 10 years or older and trucks registered at 20M or higher are exempt. A mileage reading will still be required).
6. Property tax must be paid at time of registration/title application (exceptions heavy trucks, trailers and motorbikes).
7. Title application must be signed by the new owner.

Transfer of license plate: (required for both new and used vehicles)

1. Title or MSO and other forms as required for titling a new or used vehicles.
2. Current registration receipt. (If not available, tag number plus a fee for duplicate registration)
3. Previous vehicle must be sold or traded within 30 days of new purchase.
4. Name of buyer and sale date of previous vehicle.
5. Assignment of name on new title must match name on previous vehicle registration.

Autos less than 4500 lbs. $42.50
Autos over 4500 lbs. $52.25
12 M Trucks $52.25

Trailers:

2,000-8,000* $47.25
8,001-12,000 $57.25
12,001 and over $67.25

If the weight of the trailer and the load combined is less than 2,000 pounds, registration is optional.
If farm trailer, hauling the farmers own product, has a load of less than 6,000 pounds, registration is optional.
For fees on trucks with gross weight of over 16,000 pounds, call the County Treasurer’s Office.

Property tax paid at time of registration/title application (exceptions Heavy Trucks, Trailers and Motorbikes).

Tax / Tag Refunds

You may be eligible for a prorated tax/tag refund if

1. You sell your vehicle and it is not replaced.
2. You move PERMANENTLY to another state and register your vehicle there. Your current tag and registration must be turned in at the time the notification for refund is made. Applicant must supply social security number (personal vehicle) or the federal tax ID number (business or leased vehicles), these are required by the State of Kansas before a refund is made. To maximize your refund, application(s) should be made prior to the last working day of the month the vehicle was sold.

REFUNDS ARE CALCULATED ONLY FROM THE DATE THE APPLICATION FOR REFUND WAS RECEIVED IN THE COUNTY TREASURER’S OFFICE, NOT THE DATE OF SALE OR THE DATE YOU MOVED, IF EARLIER
